Rapid advancements in technology and the growing number of professions that rely on computer science make it crucial for all students to have opportunities to become computer literate and to gain foundational computer science skills, such as computational thinking and programming/ coding. These skills encourage students to create and innovate, and position them to take advantage of the growing career opportunities that arise from attaining these skills. Underscoring the increasing demand for people with computer science skills in the labor market, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)1 estimates that jobs in computer and mathematical occupations will increase by 18% in the 10 years leading up to 2022, creating more than 1.3 million job openings by 2022.
